Arctopus echinatus – The Traditional Medicinal “Sand-Bur” of South Africa

Arctopus echinatus, known locally as the Sand-Bur or Platdoring, is a spiny, ground-hugging plant from the Cape Floristic Region. Despite its prickly appearance, it has been treasured for centuries in traditional Khoi and San medicine for its powerful healing properties.

Traditionally, Arctopus echinatus was brewed into teas or decoctions to cleanse the body, support bladder health, and relieve kidney troubles. It was also valued for easing urinary infections, swelling, fever, and pain. Early settlers in the Cape adopted the plant as well, ensuring its place in South Africa’s herbal healing traditions.

Modern interest is growing in the plant’s diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects, though research is still emerging. With its deep cultural heritage and unique medicinal values, Arctopus echinatus remains one of South Africa’s most fascinating indigenous healing plants.
